This operator combines nouns or properties into a single rule. The rule Noun1 Has Noun2 will make it so that, if an instance of Noun1 gets destroyed, an instance of Noun2 will appear in its place. The rule Noun Is Not Noun causes all instances of Noun to be destroyed. One Not will overrule an arbitrary number of matching rules. Similarly, the rule Keke Is Not You will cause Keke Is You to fail, but Keke Is Move will not be affected. For example, Rock Is Not Crab will cause Rock Is Crab to fail, but will not affect the rule Rock Is Flag. When combined with Is, this prevents the noun from being used in the corresponding rule. This will be visually indicated in the game by crosses appearing over the words making up the ignored rule. For example, if the rule Rock Is Rock is active, the rule Rock Is Wall will not apply. This will overrule all other rules that ask for the transformation. Noun IS Noun (the two nouns are the same) will prevent this noun from being transformed. For example, if the only rule currently active is Baba Is You, and the player forms the rule Baba Is Crab, they will lose control of the game because there are no rules describing the behavior of Crab.
The object after the transformation will not retain any properties. If this rule is disassembled, this transformation will not be undone. The rule Noun1 IS Noun2 will replace all appearances of Noun1 to Noun2 immediately. By moving the words that make up the rule out of alignment, the rule stops being applied, and the player can walk through the Wall. As an example, the first puzzle in the game starts off with the player completely surrounded by Walls, along with the rule Wall Is Stop, preventing the player from leaving that area. When this rule is disassembled, the noun loses the property. During the time it is assembled, the rule Noun Is Property will make the noun possess the stated property. This is the most significant word in the game. There are many words in the game that are not listed here. A single word can be a part of multiple rules at the same time. Rules can be formed by placing the blocks that make them up either left to right or top to bottom.
The simplest form of rule is the one using the Is operator, described below. Operators link the nouns and properties to form rules. To distinguish these words visually, they have a colored background, with the letters themselves appearing black. Some of them are verbs, like Move or Stop, while others, like You or Red, aren't. Noun words are colored and have no background.
If the word for an object is not present, or if it is not part of any rule, it is visible in the level, but it has no behavior, and other objects can pass through it.
An object can exist in a level, but its corresponding word might not, and vice versa. Nouns represent objects in the game, like Baba or Rock. The words in Baba Is You can be roughly split into three categories: nouns, operators and properties. In order to win, the player (usually Baba) must reach the winning object (the object specified by the rule "is win").
